Meet the Host
Joe Moravchik

Joe in western Colorado
Joe Moravchik (Mohr-rahv-chick) is the creator, researcher, writer, and host of College on the Radio. He is also a hockey broadcast analyst alongside Gordon Moore and play-by-play announcer Jimmy LeRue for the Raider Hockey Radio Network on KYMN.
Joe's love for radio traces back to his childhood, when he listened to ball games with his father on broadcasts from Milwaukee, Madison, and Green Bay, and gathered with his brothers at night to hear mystery theater programs based out of Chicago. Those early experiences inspired an interest in thoughtful conversation and compelling storytelling, characteristic features of his show today.
Joe was a distinguished police officer, where he had experience in patrol, field training of new officers, the major crimes division, a specialty unit called Target Enforcement, as a sergeant, and then as an (acting) commander of two shifts. He was a multi-time recipient of the prestigious Exemplary Officer Award – ceremoniously presented by the Attorney General for the State of Wisconsin. He is retired from service, but is an integral part of training the new generation of law enforcement.
Now, Joe is a highly regarded instructor and teacher of courses on Constitutional Law (Bill of Rights), Minnesota and Wisconsin Statutes, Ethics, Search and Seizure Law, Criminal Procedure, Tactics and De-escalation, Criminology, and The History and Current State of U.S. Policing, among other topics, primarily to police, sheriff, and state patrol cadets, but also to students in continuing education and professional studies programs. He currently offers popular classes open to the public at the University of Minnesota’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and Northfield’s Cannon Valley Elder Collegium. Additionally, he partners with St. Olaf College to provide students meaningful opportunities to learn about, and work in, the media.
In his free time—for over two decades—Joe has coached or administered youth and high school athletics, primarily girls hockey. He has been a three time keynote speaker at the annual Minnesota Hockey Excellence in Leadership Conference on the topic of building girls hockey programs, and has been featured in Minnesota Hockey, Let’s Play Hockey, and USA Hockey magazines.
About his education, Joe earned a J.D. from the William Mitchell College of Law. There, he was awarded a scholarship, was a member of the Constitutional Law Moot Court Trial Team, won a CALI Award for Academic Excellence, and was runner-up for the Student Award of Merit, nominated by faculty and presented to the law student that demonstrates significant contributions to the betterment of society.
Meet the Co-Hosts (Joe's British Labs)
Always in Good Company
Joe is a British Labrador Retriever enthusiast and is rarely without a loyal companion by his side. Over the years, Bruen, Oshie, and Murphy have each been part of that journey, with Bruen and Oshie now fondly remembered as guardian angels.
Whether on a lakeside trail walk, traveling in the Mountain West, or even during CoR show tapings, Joe’s love for his labs is always present.

The Story Behind the Logo
This photograph is one of Joe's favorites and serves as the inspiration behind the College on the Radio logo. Taken in 2006, it captures Joe walking along a wooded trail in northern Wisconsin with his daughters, Lauren (left) and Lily (right).
What began as a cherished family moment evolved into a powerful symbol of the program's mission. The silhouette featured in the College on the Radio logo is drawn from this photograph. The trail represents life's journey, while the stars symbolize the endless possibilities that curiosity, education, and lifelong learning can reveal.
More than a snapshot in time, this image embodies the values at the heart of College on the Radio: guidance, exploration, discovery, and growth. It reflects the belief that every person, regardless of where they begin, has the potential to embark on a transformational journey—one that leads to greater understanding, new opportunities, and the very best version of themselves.

Supporting Girls & Women's Hockey
Beyond police service, teaching, and broadcasting, Joe has devoted decades to coaching and leading athletic programs. Widely respected for building a comprehensive and successful girls hockey program (in partnership with coach Mike Skaja), Joe believes the greatest experiences in athletics extend beyond the rink. While winning is certainly rewarding, the true measure of success is found in the character developed throughout the journey - learning to work as a team, pursuing shared goals, overcoming adversity, and embracing values such as confidence, discipline, integrity, perseverance, and leadership.
Joe's dedication to mentoring student-athletes and coaches reflects his enduring commitment to developing the next generation of leaders.
